A Buford man was killed in a wreck Monday morning on Interstate 985 after he struck a tree along the shoulder, police said.

Michael Bruce, 29, died from his injuries at the scene near the Buford Drive exit, according to Gwinnett County Police.

According to a report, Bruce was driving southbound around 3:30 a.m. Monday on the interstate. Bruce and Jeny Jackson, of Oakwood, both intended to exit onto Buford Drive, according to the police report.

“(Bruce’s car) attempted to pass (Jackson’s car) on the right shoulder while attempting to exit,” according to the report. “(Bruce’s car) struck (Jackson’s car) in the rear which caused (Jackson) to lose control and strike the guardrail on the left side of I-985 south.”

Bruce struck the guardrail on the right shoulder and continued onto the Buford Drive exit ramp.

“(Bruce’s car) lost control and struck a tree along the shoulder of the ramp,” according to the report. “(Bruce) was not restrained and died from his injuries at the scene.”

No injuries were reported for Jackson.

The report said “alcohol and speed are being investigated as contributing factors for (Bruce’s car).”
