Boat fire on Lake Lanier remains a mystery

Authorities are investigating an early Thursday boat fire on Lake Lanier, including trying to find the vessel’s owners.

Fire crews responded at 6:08 a.m. to the Shoal Creek campground area in the southern part of the lake on reports from a passing fisherman. They found a 20-foot cabin cruiser fully involved.

Hall County’s Marine Rescue Team searched the area but found no victims despite a large debris field in the cove.

The boat, which was in about 35 feet of water, ended up burning to the water line.

Georgia Department of Natural Resources officers used side-scan sonar and other equipment in trying to determine the type of boat as well as numbers that would help identify the owner, DNR spokeswoman Robin Hill said.

“They have not made contact with an owner or anyone else that was on the boat at the time of the incident,” she added.

The fire’s cause also hasn’t been determined.
