A bill renaming the Clermont post office after a native of the North Hall town who was killed in action during the Vietnam War is now poised for a full U.S. Senate vote.
Plans call for renaming the building on Main Street the Zack T. Addington Post Office. House Resolution 3821 passed out of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Wednesday, according to the office of U.S. Rep. Doug Collins, R-Gainesville.
The bill passed the U.S. House in November after being introduced in September.
Addington joined the Marine Corps in 1967. He became a rifleman in the 3rd Marine Division of the Fleet Marine Force and was deployed to Vietnam that year.
Promoted to lance corporal, he died on May 16, 1968, at age 19.
That June, Addington received the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon.
