A 23-year-old man was arrested after authorities say he contacted someone he thought was a 14-year-old female multiple times with the intent of engaging in a sexual relationship.
Matthew Cody Smith, of Barrow County, was arrested Thursday, June 6, after a months-long investigation in which he contacted a person he thought to be minor female 13 times over the internet, according to a press release from the Hall County Sheriff’s Office.
Smith contacted the female first on Jan. 31, again on Feb. 1 and then 11 other times from May 15 until June 5.
He has been charged with 13 counts of sexual exploitation of a child.
Smith was arrested in Winder and was booked into the Hall County Jail where he remains.
No bond has been set and the case is still under investigation by the Hall County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.
The arrest was a result of “Operation Interception,” an initiative targeting child predators centered around the 2019 Super Bowl in Atlanta.
The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the investigation.
