A man who shot himself after being pulled over by police Tuesday afternoon in Gainesville has died, according to Cpl. Jessica Van of the Gainesville Police Department.

Van said the stop was initiated after the officer witnessed an illegal U-turn. When the officer approached the vehicle the driver shot himself. The traffic stop was in the area of Pearl Nix and John Morrow parkways.

He was identified Thursday as Charles Eugene Allison, 54 of Gainesville.

Van said Allison was alive when transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is handling the case.
