A Hampton man, who allegedly injured two Gainesville Police officers Monday, Nov. 18, by driving off while they were stuck partially in his car, was not captured until the next day after multiple law enforcement agencies said they chased him all the way from Clermont to Blairsville, according to authorities.

Gainesville Police were called around 11 a.m. Monday to the CVS on Park Hill Drive, where a man was reportedly attempting to return items without receipts and was “acting abnormally,” Cpl. Jessica Van wrote in an email.

The man, later identified as Justin Ursel Folds, 25, returned to his car and sat in the parking lot.

“Folds was described sitting in the driver seat, going in and out of consciousness. He was uncooperative when officers asked for him to identify himself,” Van wrote in an email.

Officers tried to detain him, but Folds drove off while two officers “were stuck partially in the vehicle with him,” Van said.

The officers are OK and suffered only superficial injuries.

“We are fortunate they were able to free themselves from the vehicle and avoid a more severe or traumatic outcome,” Van wrote in an email.

Folds was not located until around 5 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, when Hall County Sheriff’s Office deputies saw a stolen car in the area of Hub Head Road in Clermont that had been involved in the Gainesville case.

Deputies identified the driver as Folds and attempted to pull him over, but Folds sped up, according to the Sheriff’s Officer.

Hall County’s deputies followed him into White County, but eventually called it off “out of concern for officer/public safety and loss of radio contact,” Hall County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Derreck Booth wrote in an email.

Georgia State Patrol troopers were then dispatched to the pursuit.

According to a report, the trooper was on Ga. 11 near Booger Hollow Road when the suspect vehicle passed him.

The chase reached speeds faster than 100 mph, and the suspect was seen “throwing plastic bags out the driver’s side window” and “swerving into oncoming traffic,” according to the GSP report.

Eventually, the suspect’s vehicle drove behind the Seasons Inn Motel in Blairsville into a dead-end alley, where he then threw a box out of the driver’s side window before reversing, according to the report.

A Union County Sheriff’s Office deputy used his Taser on the suspect before pulling him from the vehicle and handcuffing him.

Folds told authorities his back was injured, so EMS was called.

“The box that was thrown from the suspect’s vehicle contained methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia,” according to the GSP report.

Gainesville Police acquired warrants for aggravated assault against a peace officer, while the Hall County Sheriff’s Office obtained warrants for fleeing and eluding a police officer, a stop violation and reckless driving.

Folds was later taken to the Union County Detention Center, where he is being held on a $57,826 bond.

The charges listed on the jail website include possession of methamphetamine, tampering with evidence, theft by receiving stolen property, possession of drug-related objects, driving while license suspended, obstructing or hindering law enforcement officers, reckless driving and aggressive driving.

The case is still under investigation.
