The former secretary of Central Baptist Church who resigned in May was accused this week by police of taking $44,213 in church funds, according to court documents.

Mary Ann Lee, 75, of Cleveland, was charged with felony theft by taking.

According to the warrant, Lee allegedly took “money in the form of church funds” between Jan. 8, 2015, and Aug. 26 of this year.

No attorney information was listed for Lee with Magistrate Court officials.

Gainesville Police began investigating roughly $150,000 missing from the Main Street church in August, which authorities said they believed took place over four years.

“This took place during a time period when others were employed and the current staff suspects previous employees pocketed money that could possibly be over $150,000,” Van previously told The Times.

Van said a financial investigator conducted an initial investigation before police were contacted.

“We completed an internal review of our financial records and have taken that information and passed it on to law enforcement. … Because it’s being investigated, we’re really not at liberty to say anything more about it,” the Rev. Mike Taylor previously told The Times.

Taylor did not return a request for comment Thursday.
