Person killed in I-985 wreck near Oakwood after driver says he fell asleep

A Dahlonega man told Georgia State Patrol he fell asleep Friday morning while driving on Interstate 985 South before his car struck a tree, killing his passenger.

Paul Stevens, 21, was charged with second-degree vehicular homicide and failure to maintain lane after the crash around 7 a.m. Friday, April 13, near mile marker 17, according to Georgia State Patrol.

Dylan Tuthill, 19, of Dahlonega, was killed in the crash.

Patrol spokesman Anthony Coleman said Stevens was driving a 2002 Nissan Xterra when he ran off the west side of the road in a curve and traveled down an embankment.

“(The car) then entered a wooded area and struck a cement block structure with its front,” Coleman said. “After impact, (the car) rotated counter-clockwise and struck a tree with its right side.”
