The body of a man who drowned in the Chattahoochee River near the line Forsyth-Fulton County line on Saturday has been identified.

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office said Robert Allen Hancock, 61, of Lawrenceville, was found submerged in the water by fishermen in the area of McGinnis Ferry Boat Ramp.

The Forsyth County Fire Department and Georgia Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Rangers responded to the scene after being notified fishermen had found the body at approximately 4:45 p.m. Saturday, according to DNR spokesman Mark McKinnon.

Officials said Hancock’s jon boat was found nearby and the initial investigation didn’t reveal signs of foul play.

Detectives said Hancock may have fallen from his boat. An autopsy at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab is scheduled.

DNR reported a total of nine boating under the influence incidents in the Gainesville area on Saturday and Sunday as of 10 p.m. Sunday. Three total injuries in the Gainesville area were reported through the same time.

Elsewhere, seven people were rescued unharmed about noon Sunday after their boat sank near Van Pugh Park off Lake Lanier.

Hall County Fire Services got a call about a boat problem. Upon arrival, Marine Rescue 1 found the people in the water.

“Apparently, the vessel had experienced some type of mechanical failure and had begun to sink,” Hall Fire Marshal Scott Cagle said.

Helping in the rescue was Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the Forsyth County Fire Department, he said.
