A boater found a Gainesville man’s body floating just south of Don Carter State Park in Lake Lanier just after 2:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

The victim was Thomas Wayne Chapman, 36, who the Hall County Sheriff’s Office said was “likely in the water for more than one day.” Deputy Stephen Wilbanks said Chapman was last seen by family about five days before being found and that there were no witnesses of Chapman going under that the sheriff’s office was aware of Saturday night.

“There were no obvious signs of trauma or foul play,” Wilbanks wrote in a press release.

An autopsy by the Dekalb County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause of death.
