Banks County firefighters work the scene of a truck fire on I-85 northbound on July 22, 2019.

The melons contained water, but apparently not enough to be flame retardant.

A load of groceries, including watermelons, spilled onto the Interstate 85 northbound Monday after a tractor trailer caught fire, according to authorities.

Banks County Fire and EMS responded just before 2 p.m. Monday, July 22, to exit 154, where the vehicle was half involved in fire.

“No injuries were reported and a local clean-up company is removing the debris. The trailer was hauling groceries and was fully loaded,” Banks County Fire Chief Steve Nichols said.

The fire was extinguished, but the off ramp to Martins Bridge Road was closed.
