Authorities said they believe a 5-year-old started a fire early this morning at the Harrison Square apartments.

Gainesville Fire responded around 3:30 a.m. to the K building of the public housing complex on Athens Street, where “flames were visible in the second floor area” of the apartments.

Division Chief Keith Smith said no was injured, and firefighters kept the flames contained to the room.

“Upon investigation, the fire marshal has determined that the fire started on the bed in the bedroom,” Smith wrote in a news release. “Unfortunately, it does appear that a juvenile started the fire.”

Smith said the 5-year-old boy “started the fire with a lighter.”

The estimated damage was roughly $20,000.
