If you’ve been wondering about something in your community, Ask The Times is your place to get answers. The following question was submitted by a reader and answered through the efforts of our news staff.

The empty lot across the pedestrian bridge on Jesse Jewell Parkway, I remember always passing by the lot where the fire station was and there was a picture of a hotel/office building on the construction sign. Why hasn’t it been built?

“Our office has not been given any recent updates about the project,” Gainesville Planning Manager Matt Tate wrote in an email. “Unfortunately the original timing of the project hit during the 2008 recession. My understanding is that the owner/developer is exploring development opportunities.”

Owner Wendell Starke said he has no specific plans for construction on the property at this point.

“It’s well situated for future development,” Starke said. “It just needs the right opportunity.”
