Downtown Gainesville property owners call it an eyesore, but one prominent Hall County architect says the old House of Kustom building — scheduled for demolition this week — may hold historical significance. The building sits on the site where dozens of young women died at the Cooper Pants Factory as a result of the devastating 1936 tornado, said Garland Reynolds Jr., who has petitioned Gainesville City Council to authorize an archaeological investigation of the grounds. “The city should not be able to raze this without some recognition,” he told The Times, responding to an article about the impending demolition.
