Rates for the title ad valorem tax added in 2013 will remain at 7 percent through 2018.

The TAVT essentially replaced the annual “birthday” tax in 2013, with car buyers paying a tax 6.5 percent of the vehicle’s worth. That tax was increased to 6.75 percent in 2014 and to 7 percent this year.

The tax applies to new vehicle sales and private party sales each time a vehicle is sold and retitled. New residents to the state also are subject to the tax.
