Intersections up for improvements
The Georgia Department of Transportation is looking at improving these Hall County intersections next year:
- Ga. 53/Mundy Mill Road at Old Oakwood Road
- Ga. 53/McEver Road at Mountain View Road
- McEver at Old Flowery Branch Road
- McEver at Mundy Mill
- Ga. 13/Atlanta Highway at Phil Niekro Boulevard
- Atlanta Highway at Memorial Park Drive
- Ga. 60/Thompson Bridge Road at Ga. 283/Mount Vernon Road
- Cleveland Highway at Ga. 284/Clarks Bridge Road
- Ga. 52/Brookton-Lula Road at Cleveland Highway
Nine Hall County intersections are set for upgrades next year, including work that will bring them to federal Americans with Disabilities Act standards.
Four of the crossings are on Ga. 53, which crisscrosses through Hall. They are Mundy Mill Road at Old Oakwood Road, and McEver Road at Mountain View, Old Flowery Branch and Mundy Mill roads.
The others are at Ga. 13/Atlanta Highway at Phil Niekro Boulevard and Memorial Park Drive; Ga. 60/Thompson Bridge Road at Ga. 283/Mount Vernon Road; and Cleveland Highway at Ga. 284/Clarks Bridge Road and Ga. 52/Brookton-Lula Road.
The project calls for new equipment, including traffic lights that are more energy efficient and can be seen easier in low-light conditions such as rain, fog and snow. ADA-related work involves installation of new pedestrian signals, crosswalk striping and wheelchair ramps, said Teri Pope, DOT district spokeswoman.
Right-of-way acquisition is underway, involving 10 parcels, with an estimated cost of $430,000.
The construction cost estimate is $1.8 million, with the project expected to be let for bid next summer.
“As funds allow, (the DOT) is working to upgrade every intersection to these new standards and using new equipment,” Pope said. “Signals are grouped together based on a priority order based on age of signal heads, computer equipment and maintenance problems of the equipment.”
Hall County has started work through a contractor, Simpson Trucking & Grading of Gainesville, on a new left-turn lane at the Ga. 13/Memorial Park intersection, which is near the Chicopee Mill Village community.
Hall civil engineer Jody Woodall has said the project should take four to six weeks to complete.
The project will cost about $215,000, with $200,000 from the state’s Quick Response operational improvement program and the balance from Hall’s special purpose local option sales taxes.
Also, the county is looking to improve McEver Road at Gainesville Street/Jim Crow Road in Flowery Branch.
That project is in right-of-way acquisition, a process that “has taken a little longer than expected due to contacting all of the parcel owners,” Woodall said. “Some have conducted their own appraisals, which has taken a little longer.”
He said the county “anticipates bidding the project for construction after the first of the year.”
