A child died and five others were taken to the hospital after a three-vehicle crash Tuesday on Poplar Springs Road at Sloan Mill Road, according to authorities.
The 6-year-old boy has not been named by authorities. No charges will be filed, according to the state patrol.
Geovanna Juarez, 33, of Gainesville, was driving a 2010 Mazda eastbound after 7 p.m. on Sloan Mill Road and approached the Poplar Springs Road intersection. James Cripps, 41, of Gainesville, was driving southbound in a Chevrolet van on Poplar Springs Road.
It is uncertain whether Juarez fully stopped at the intersection, Georgia State Patrol Sgt. Anthony Coleman wrote in an email.
“(The Mazda) entered the path of travel of (the Chevrolet van),” Coleman wrote.
The Chevrolet van hit the Mazda’s left side.
“(The Mazda) then started to rotate as it traveled off the east shoulder of Poplar Springs Road in an eastward direction,” Coleman wrote.
The van then crossed the center line into the northbound lane of Poplar Springs Road, where a 2005 Mazda was driven by Ashley Sosebee, 26, of Gainesville.
“(Sosebee) stated she saw the initial collision between (the other vehicles), as (she) was stopping in the roadway in an an attempt to avoid the collision,” Coleman wrote.
The Chevrolet van hit Sosebee’s Mazda “once it crossed the centerline in an out of control movement,” Coleman said.
Juarez had four juveniles in her car of ages 5, 6, 8 and 16.
The 6-year-old boy died. The other children, all girls, were transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center. The 5-year-old and 8-year-old girls were later taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
Cripps and Sosebee were also taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where they were treated and released.
