Gainesville police have arrested three teenagers they believe to be responsible for an armed robbery and assault of a taxi driver Tuesday night.

Police have charged Dion McClam, 17, of Norcross and two 16-year-old boys with armed robbery, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, according to a news release.

The three teenagers were arrested in Gainesville after a driver for Taxi del Norte reported that he was beaten and robbed when picking up a cab fare at Lake Forest Apartments, 1360 Otilla Drive.

The driver told police that when he arrived at the apartment complex shortly after midnight, three boys got into the back of the cab. One of them put the driver in a choke hold before all three pulled guns, according to reports. The driver said the three teenagers struck him in the back of the head with the gun barrels and took his wallet before fleeing on foot.

Police used a police dog to find the three suspects and recovered the driver’s wallet. They say the three boys are related to each other; McClam and one of the 16-year-olds were staying with the other 16-year-old in the apartment complex.

Police do not believe the three are responsible for a March 18 armed robbery at the Lake Forest complex.
