Eighteen cottages are being proposed near the University of North Georgia and Thurmon Tanner Parkway in Oakwood.

Bill Stark Properties of South Hall is seeking to rezone 2.3 acres at 2988 Frontage Road for the development, also across Robinson Place and near the Hayes Chrysler dealership off Frontage.

The proposal, set to go before the Oakwood Planning Commission on Monday, July 16, calls for 1,440-square foot homes — 720 square feet per floor — featuring three bedrooms, said B.R. White, Oakwood’s community development director.

The development also would feature two outdoor patio areas, and the entrance would be off Frontage, according to a map of the proposal.

“There is a definite need for housing for students and other people due to the growth in the Oakwood community,” according to Bill Stark’s application.

UNG “has become a four-year school with no housing for students.”

The property is now zoned for commercial development.

“The current accessibility for (commercial) would not be as desirable,” the application states.

“As a residential community, it would be very accessible.”

The proposal is one of many residential developments that have been planned or approved in Oakwood and Flowery Branch this year.
