Gainesville firefighters responded to a residential fire early Saturday morning after 10 people inside the home were awakened by a smoke detector.

When crews from the Gainesville Fire Department arrived at about 3 a.m., the 1,500-square-foot home in the 400 block of Martin Alley off Rainey Street was 50 percent involved with fire and heavy smoke, said Fire Chief Jon Canada.

It took crews approximately 45 minutes to control the blaze, he said.

At the time of the fire three adults and seven children were sleeping. Another adult that lives at the home was not there at the time, Canada said.

All the occupants were able to evacuate the home and two adults and three children were transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center and treated for smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
