Recognition from service members here and abroad

ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. — Brig. Gen. Leslie C. Smithof Gainesville, commander, 20th Support Command was recently promoted to major general during a ceremony Sept. 21.

This marks the first time the 20th Support Command will have a major general as commander.Gen. David M. Rodriguez, commanding general, U.S. Army Forces Command hosted the ceremony.



Air Force Maj. Mark C. Hand has retired from the U.S. Air Force.

Hand is the remotely piloted fundamentals course director assigned to the 502nd Air Base Wing Operating Location Bravo at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas. The major has served in the military for 21 years.

He is the son of Florence Tumlin of Oscar Gilstrap Road in Clermont.

Hand graduated in 1980 from Johnson High School in Gainesville, and received a bachelor’s degree in 1984 from Georgia Institute of Technology.
