Army Pfc. Tommy N. Culbertson graduated from the M1 Abrams Tank System Maintainer Advanced Individual Training course at Fort Knox, Ky.

The course is designed to train students to perform maintenance on Army Abrams tanks, and they work on vehicular mounted armament, tank gun turret drive and fire control systems. The course included skills training in electronic, electrical and mechanical principles and concepts. They also trained on the use of test and mechanical equipment, schematics, drawings and wiring diagrams.

He is the son of Tara M. Culbertson of Oakwood and is a 2009 graduate of East Hall High School in Gainesville.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Kevin M. Scott graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

He is the son of Richard Scott of Gainesville and grandson of Elinor Hurkmans of Cumming. Scott is a 2008 graduate of North Forsyth High School in Cumming.

Navy Fireman Michael T. Shigley recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill.

During the eight-week program, Shigley completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

He is the son of Anita I. Lenoir of Buford and is a 2002 graduate of Habersham Central High School in Mount Airy.
