Laura Gazaway, a senior at Johnson High School, recently was crowned the 2008 homecoming queen during the school's football game against West Hall. Gazaway is the daughter of Libby and Nick Gazaway.

As part of Friendship Elementary School's English Speakers of Other Languages program, firefighter and emergency medical technician Brian Stacy, along with Lt. Burt Sanders and Lt. Beverly Walke, talked about safety precautions and evacuation procedures to follow at home during a fire.

Johnson High School juniors Caleb Johnson and David Stamper received the Statesman Award while attending the SkillsUSA Fall Leadership Conference held recently on Jekyll Island. A total of 10 SkillsUSA members attended the conference where they collaborated with students from all over the state and attended seminars, listened to guest speakers and took part in interactive work sessions. SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization that helps prepare students for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations. It was formerly known as Vocational Industrial Clubs of America.
