Great Strides walk participants from Lanier Technical College were Bennie Bruce, Kenneth Hewell, Amy and Christina Collins, Mindy and Jacob Martin, Christie Lee, James Lester, Judy and Leslie Wade and Faye Humphries.

Instructors and students from Lanier Technical College participated in the Annual Great Strides 4.8 kilometer for Cystic Fibrosis Walk in May at Georgia Tech. The school was a Kilometer Sponsor and the Student Government Association contributed $1,500 toward the effort to find a cure.  

Andrea Williamson-English, school nurse at Chestnut Mountain Elementary, and Jennifer Smallwood, school nurse at North Hall Middle School, have been named School Nurses of the Year by Hall County school system Superintendent Will Schofield.

Lindsey Hallock of Gainesville has been named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. To be named to the dean's list, students must receive a 3.5 grade-point average.

Robert Thompson of Gainesville has been named to the merit list for the summer semester at Darton College. To be named to the merit list, students must receive a 3.4 grade-point average.

Callie Ulm of Gainesville was named to the president's honor roll at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla., for the summer semester. To be named to the president's honor roll, students must receive a 4.0 grade-point average.

Jay Jackson of Gainesville recently graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Ind.

The Grady Young Foundation Inc. has announced its 2008 scholarship recipients. The foundation awarded eight book scholarships, four memorial scholarships and two incentive awards in memory of Grady Young, his wife, Eloise Mosley Young, and two daughters, Irene Young Johnson and Marie Young Johnson.

  • Book scholarship recipients were Thomas Johnson, Miranda Reece, Taki Harper, Michael Smith, Amanda Haney, Jasmine Fortson, Kiara May and Jillian Wilms.
  • Memorial scholarship recipients were Ericka Williams, Jaware Robbins, Kaneisha Stovall and Paul Vogel.
  • Incentive award recipients were Michelle Henderson and Jeanne Delgado.
