Riverside Military history class goes back in time

Capt. John Stumpf’s U.S. military history middle school class learned more about items utilized during the Revolutionary War during a class this summer.

Members of the local Lyman Hall Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution exhibited items such as a flute, handmade soap, children’s toys, weaponry, maps and a reproduction of the U.S. Constitution.

The organization’s goals include inspiring and educating the community and its youth with knowledge of events surrounding the American Revolution.

Riverside Military cadets advance at Boys State, Nation

Six cadets from Riverside Military Academy participated in the American Legion Boys State program in June, and one cadet advanced to the Boys Nation program July 19-26 in Washington, D.C.

Each cadet participated in his respective home state. Cadet First Lieutenant John-Mark MacFarlane attended Boys State in Massachusetts; Cadet 1st Sgt. Pearce Sauls attended in Texas; and Cadet 1st Sgt. Harrison Summerour, Cadet 1st Sgt. Jacob Deem, Cadet Sgt. 1st Class James Hitt and Cadet 2nd Lt. Connor Schiro all participated in Georgia. Several of these cadets were elected to influential positions and served as representatives on county and state levels.

The Boys State program, founded by the American Legion in 1935, is a comprehensive weeklong leadership action course in state and local government open to rising male seniors who qualify for this selective opportunity. Participants are immersed in the operation of local, county and state government to develop a working knowledge of the structure of government. Activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law enforcement presentations, assemblies and recreational programs.

Schiro was elected as a sheriff and Summerour was elected mayor for the Boys State program in Georgia.

Sauls ran for Texas Boys State Senate and won president of the Senate (Senate pro tempore). This position provided him with opportunities to draft legislation, sign bills and have conferences with the Speaker of the House.

Deem was one of only two elected state senators who represented Georgia at the American Legion Boys Nation in Washington, D.C.

The Boys Nation program, begun in 1946 as Boys Forum of National Government, educates young men on the structure and function of federal government. Participants also meet with elected officials from their home states on Capitol Hill.

Representatives caucus at the start of the session and organize into committees to conduct hearings on bills submitted by delegates. Deem’s bill was created in response to tragedies such as the Boston bombings and 9/11 terrorist attacks. He proposed a presidential inspection of all airports receiving international flights, and his idea is to address the reliability and efficiency of the inspection department in addition to how well it works in conjunction with other divisions.

Deem was introduced to high-ranking military personnel including U.S. Army Deputy Commanding General, Maj. Gen. Jeffrey S. Buchanan; Army Vice Chief of Staff, Gen. John F. Campbell; and Sergeant Major of the Army Raymond F. Chandler III.

The 98 Boys Nation senators had the privilege to meet President Barack Obama and have a photo taken with him at the White House on July 27.

Pierpont Brown awarded Wofford College scholarship

Pierpont Flanders Brown of Gainesville was awarded an Old Main Scholarship to attend Wofford College recently.

Brown is a member of the class of 2017. He is the son of Dr. Pepper and Clarissa Brown.

Old Main stands at the center of our campus and is a lasting symbol of the values Wofford seeks to instill in its students: service to others, academic excellence and leadership. Recipients of this scholarship are recognized for these qualities.

Buford Woman’s Club awards three scholarships

The GFWC-GaFWC Buford Lanier Woman’s Club awarded a $1,500 scholarship to the following female students:

Forrest Ann Anderson graduated from Flowery Branch High School and will attend the University of South Carolina.

Amanda Leigh Hicks graduated from Buford High School and will attend the University of Georgia.

Lenae Grace Hodnett graduated from Buford High School and will attend Freed-Hardemen University in Henderson, Tenn.

26 Hall County students receive foundation scholarships

The North Georgia Community Foundation recently awarded $163,250 in scholarships to North Georgia high school students pursuing higher education this fall.
