Sam Terray of Gainesville, son of Michele and Ricky Terray, recently participated in the Concordia Languages Villages program at Waldsee, a German language village in Bemidji, Minn. Terray received a Concordia Language Villages Global Citizen Scholarship.
Hugh McKinney, an eight- grade physical science teacher at Gainesville Middle School, was recently selected as the 2010-11 Teacher of the Year by The Northeast Georgia Youth Science & Technology Center. Earlier this year, McKinney was selected as Teacher of the Year by Gainesville Middle School Gainesville City schools.
He also was recognized as a Master Teacher by Brenau University and Warren Featherbone Foundation.
On Aug. 6, Regions Bank Partners in Education and Friends of Lyman Hall from Deaton Creek took donations for students and teachers. Sponsors donated school supplies to Lyman Hall Elementary for the 2010-11 school year. So many donations were given that Regions Bank delivered the supplies in a school bus.
Jennifer Whitehead of Gainesville was named to the Dean's list for academic excellence for the spring 2010 semester at The Johns Hopkins University. To be selected for this honor, a student must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale in a program of at least 14 credits with at least 12 graded credits.
Whitehead is the daughter of Harry and Janice Whitehead and attended Lakeview Academy in Gainesville.
Zachary Ryan Balest of Gainesville is one of the first 40 freshmen from the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine attending the MCG/University of Georgia Medical Partnership in Athens. The inaugural class started Aug. 9 at the Partnership campus, which features a four-year medical education program created to help alleviate a statewide shortage of physicians. Students are studying basic science and clinical skills in a program that mirrors the curriculum at the Augusta campus.
Patrick W. Shuler of Gainesville and Edward L Wells of Flowery Branch were recently named to the Georgia Southern University 2010 summer semester dean's list. To be eligible for the Dean's List, a student must have at least a 3.50 grade point average and carry a minimum of 12 hours for the semester.
