Marine Corps Maj. Jason Filos, stationed in San Diego, has been deployed to Afghanistan for one year.

A 1994 graduate of West Hall High School, where he played football, he is the son of Ernest and Shelia Filos of Flowery Branch. His wife, Kelly Filos, lives in San Diego. He is a graduate of the University of West Georgia in Carrollton.

Army Pvt. Christian R. Brewer has graduated from the Infantryman One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning in Columbus.

During the nine weeks of basic combat training, Brewer received training in weapons employment, map reading and first-aid skills. The Advanced Individual Training course is designed to train soldiers to perform reconnaissance operations; employ, fire and recover anti-personnel and anti-tank mines; locate and neutralize land mines and operate target and sight equipment.

Brewer is the son of Bradley Brewer of Lula and is a 2008 graduate of East Hall High School in Gainesville.

Navy Fireman recruit Phillip G. Abernathy and Navy Seaman recruits Preston T. Moran and Jonathan T. Carrega have recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

During the eight-week program, Abernathy and Moran completed training that included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival and shipboard and aircraft safety.

Abernathy is the son of Donald and stepson of Cherry Abernathy of Oakwood and is a 2008 graduate of West Hall High School in Oakwood.

Moran is the son of Thomas C. Moran of Murrayville and is a 2007 graduate of Concord High School in Concord, N.C.

Carrega is a 2009 graduate of Millcreek High School in Hoschton.

Army Pvt. Justin P. Sutton has graduated from the Basic Field Artillery Cannon Crewmember Advanced Individual Training course at Fort Sill in Lawton, Okla.

The course is designed to train servicemembers to maintain, prepare and load ammunition for firing; operate and perform operator maintenance on prime movers, self-propelled Howitzers and ammunition vehicles; store, maintain and distribute ammunition; and establish and maintain radio and wire communications.

He is the son of Paul W. Sutton of Lula and is a 2009 graduate of Banks County High School in Homer.
