American Legion Post 121 recently presented a $500 check to local disabled veteran Gordon Spears, who was injured while serving in Iraq. Spears served for 27 years, six deployments and three combat tours. He works full time as a lieutenant at Lee Arrandale State Prison.

Gainesville native Laura Frame has won the American Red Cross’ Fall Into Donating drawing, held recently in Athens. Frame graduated from the University of Georgia in 2007 with a degree in biology. She began donating blood at East Hall High School in 2002.
