Austin Tullis' grandfathers, John Tullis and Bill Evans, both retired Air force officers, visited their grandson and his class at Chestatee Middle School during a Veterans Day program in Austin’s social studies class. Tullis and Evans spoke to all the students at the school, and the lunchroom was also decorated for the event.
On behalf of the Gainesville Chapter of Citizens of Georgia Power, The Georgia Power Foundation Inc. awarded The Guest House in Gainesville with $2,500. The Guest House provides adult day health services to the elderly.
The Hall-Dawson Court Appointed Special Advocate Program recently was awarded a $7,400 grant by the Jackson EMC Foundation. Money provided will be used to purchase items for the nonprofit organization.
Lumpkin County’s Community Helping Place has been awarded a $15,000 grant by the Jackson EMC Foundation for its Client Assistance Program. The Community Helping Place provides services to Lumpkin County residents living in poverty. Money will be used to purchase items for the nonprofit organization.
The Gainesville MOMS Club recently donated $400 of Usborne books for the children at Challenged Child and Friends in Gainesville. The Gainesville MOMS Club is part of an international network of stay-at-home moms that offers support, play groups, book clubs and service opportunities.
Red Oak Sanitation collected canned goods on Nov. 9 and 12 for the Good Samaritan Food Bank in Gainesville. About 9,300 cans of food were collected to distribute for the holiday season.
The Lakeshore Squares Square Dance Club recently celebrated Veterans Day with a special dance at First Presbyterian Church in Gainesville. The group invited local military personnel who have served or are currently serving in the Armed Forces and people who work in the community service field to the event on Nov. 3. There was a flag folding ceremony that included Dale Mattice, Ken Parker, Cliff Smith and Larry Waldroop. Anne Smith did a reading of "The Meaning of the Flag Draped Coffin." Sgt. Stephen Wilbanks and his wife Christen and sons John and Matthew appeared at the event to lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Wilbanks and his family are members of First Presbyterian Church.
Air Force Airman 1st Class Brett J. Catledge has graduated from the E-3 Sentry Aircraft Aerospace Maintenance Apprentice Course at Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma City, Okla. He is the son of Walter Catledge of Gillsville.
