For fans of the Georgia Museum of Art in Athens, there's not much time left to enjoy the collection before it closes for two years.

Starting Nov. 3, the museum will be closed in anticipation of its new 30,000-square-foot addition. The construction starts early next year and the museum will reopen to the public in early 2011.

Until then, the museum is displaying items from its permanent collection that include sculptures, paintings and decorative arts. These will have a full-time home in the new display space, and the pieces on display now are a sampling of what visitors can see when the museum opens again.

During the renovation, the museum will hold events and exhibitions outside of its space, including collaborations with the Lyndon House Arts Center in Athens and other businesses and organizations statewide.

The museum's shop will be open until Dec. 24 and will continue operating online during the construction. Plus, you can keep up with the construction progress with regular posts on the Georgia Museum of Art's Web site.
