Gainesville's own singer-songwriter Nate Currin is ready to release his latest album "Goodnight California" in just a couple days with a big show at the Hard Rock Cafe in Atlanta.
The new CD, that took about a year to produce, is in typical Currin style with self-written songs about life and love but with this recording, Currin had the chance to work with producers Dan Hannon and Simon Illa. Billy Hume, who has worked with Will Smith, Ludacris and Lil' John, did the mixing on the album.
"It's pretty different, everything that I've done up to this point, for lack of a better term has been pretty low budget," Currin said. "...to me from a production, music standpoint this isn't anything comparable to anything I've done before.
"Bringing these two guys together for me, one that is more hip-hop oriented and one that is more rock oriented, really gave this album a unique flavor: it's singer/songwriter, it's rock and it's a little electronic too."
The album will be released by Archaic Cannon Records, a new Gainesville label that Currin founded with several other partners. Archaic Cannon is a record label, musician community and music blog, according to Currin's website.
"I partnered with a couple other Atlanta musicians and industry people and I am a part owner of it, so I'm actually helping run Archaic Cannon in addition to doing my music," Currin said. "I'm the first artist on the label and I'm a partner on the label, as well."
The record label is based in Gainesville, but production and recording for new and upcoming artists will be done at studios in Atlanta.
"Goodnight California" is an 11-track album and Currin said there are a couple tracks that new and old fans will be drawn to.
"We released a single about a month ago called "Dancing With The Night," which was pretty popular right off the bat ... then of course the title track "Goodnight California" I think will be popular," he said.
"My personal favorite is called ‘Yellow Springs.'"
Currin began playing the piano at 8 years old and began live performances in 2005. At the end 2006, the Nate Currin Band released his first EP, "Another Long September." Other albums include "Songs for Magnolia" and "The Darkest Sea."
