Bringing to life the story of two schoolchildren who take a break from school work and fall into a fantasy land of literature is what Fifth Row Center will be sharing this weekend’s production.

The theater group will perform the play called “The Woods” in two shows on Saturday and Sunday at the outdoor amphitheater at Sterling on the Lake in Flowery Branch.

“It’s a family play and its a comedy and basically it’s about two high school kids who waited until the last minute to do (an assignment) and fall into this fantasy land and meet many characters from literature,” said Donna Chalmers the artistic director for Fifth Row Center. “The girl Aubrey meets Dorothy from ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ ‘Alice in Wonderland’ ... then the other character meets Peter Pan and Robin Hood and the villains start teaming up together to fight against good characters.”

“The Woods” is an adaptation of a play originally written by Stephen Sondheim and produced on Broadway in the 1980s. Fifth Row Center took ideas from the original play and added their own flare for the comedic family adaptation.

There are about 20 actors involved in the hour-and-a-half long production that stars “Ryan Kibildis” as Judson and Hollie Rivers as “Aubrey.”

“It twists and mixes all of the different fun characters from children’s literature together and you just never know what is going to happen,” Chalmers said. “They do get the audience to do some participation as well and that makes it fun.”

Concessions for a small fee will be provided in the outdoor production.

“People are welcome to bring their coolers and come early, just enjoy the day,” Chalmers said.
