Members of the Lakeshore Squares say square dancing is fun and their friendships are set to music.

Locals will have the chance beginning Monday to experience square dancing with a 10-week session of classes.

"It is a very fun and relaxing group," said Dale Mattice, member and secretary for the Lakeshore Squares. "We have a caller (or teacher) there that will go through the lessons, 10 weeks at a time. He goes through something like 60 moves that teach people the basics."

Buford residents Mattice and wife Chris have been members of the Lakeshore Squares since 2002 and said they enjoy the Western-style square dancing. Dale Mattice added it is great exercise and clean entertainment.

"If you go to a regular dance you can get the equivalent of walking three miles per dance," he said.

Each class meets for two hours every Monday, and then there are scheduled dances the first and third Saturday of the month.

"The caller (Bob Morrison) tries to teach four to six steps each class," Mattice said. "We try to get the people to come to dance with an experienced dancer to learn the basic steps."

For each class there are a couple of guidelines to follow.

Most important, please be on time; also, a partner does not have to come with you and there is a dress code.

"The men have to wear long-sleeved shirts and women have their skirts with their crinoline," Mattice said. "That is all for any requirements."
