Lakeview fell to Aquinas, 58-49 on Saturday in Augusta in the first round of the Class A private school boys tournament, ending the Lions’ season and bringing to a close the illustrious career of coach Seth Vining.
Austin Montgomery scored a team-high 18 points for the Lions (18-8), Trevor Price added 14 and Joel Larsen 11 as the Lions were knocked out of the tournament by Aquinas for the second consecutive season.
Aquinas, the No. 3 seed, made 33 free throws to just seven for Lakeview, which entered as the No. 14 seed in the first season of the Georgia High School Association’s newly implemented Class A state tournament structure, which splits public and private schools into two separate brackets, seeded by a power rating system.
Ahmed Hill led all scorers with 29 points for Aquinas.
BUFORD 84, GORDON CENTRAL 68: A.J. Davis scored 32 points to lead the Wolves in the second round of the Class AAA state tournament on Saturday in Buford.
The Wolves (24-6) will play host to Woodward Academy on Wednesday, with a trip to the state semifinals on the line.
Isaiah Williams added 21 points and Kyle Doyle scored 19 for Buford, which fell in the second round last season.
DAWSON COUNTY GIRLS 58, NORTH OCONEE 50 (Friday): The Lady Tigers advanced to the quarterfinals of the state tournament with a win Friday in Bogart.
Dawson County (25-5) plays host to Decatur at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Dawsonville with a state semifinal spot on the line.
Sheyenne Seabolt led Dawson County with 16 points and seven rebounds, Carly Gilreath added 11 points, Hannah Porter finished with 10 and Ashley Parker had nine points and eight rebounds as the Lady Tigers upset the top-seeded Lady Titans.
