The Flowery Branch softball team defeated Heritage 5-3, 5-4 in a best-of-three Region 8-AAAAA tournament series to earn its first state tournament berth in school history on Wednesday in Conyers.

Kelly Kahlert notched six hits and scored four runs in the series for Flowery Branch. MacKenzie Harris and Kara Kight each earned wins in the pitching circle.

The Lady Falcons continue Region 8-AAAAA tournament play against Apalachee on Monday with another best-of-three series. Class AAAAA state tournament play begins Oct. 15.


Bailey Towles passed the 1,000 career assist mark as Lakeview Academy defeated Walnut Grove (25-12, 23-25, 25-13) and Winder-Barrow (25-20, 25-21) on Thursday in Winder.

Towles finished the night with 20 assists, nine digs and seven aces for the Lady Lions. Schyler Miller added 18 digs and an ace, and Peaches Shipley added 11 kills, four digs, three blocks and three aces. Rachel Unger contributed 10 kills, six digs and two aces.

Lakeview Academy begins area tournament play next Thursday.

NORTH HALL BEATS GAINESVILLE: Lily Paschall recorded 18 assists, four kills and an ace for North Hall in a regular-season finale win against Gainesville, 25-12, 25-12 on Thursday.

Sydney Cleveland added eight kills, three digs and an ace for the Lady Trojans, and Jen Mullican had six blocks and four kills.

North Hall plays host to Madison County in the Area 8-AAAA tournament on Tuesday in Gainesville.

JEFFERSON TAKES PAIR: Mary Carson came off the bench to start her first set of the year and notched five digs, five kills and two aces for Jefferson in wins against Jackson County (25-16, 25-16) and East Jackson (25-9, 25-17) in the regular season finale on Thursday.

Bre Arbanas added six aces, four kills and a block for the Lady Dragons (25-13, 7-3 Area 8-AA), and Grace Williamson had 11 kills, six digs and two aces.

Jefferson plays in the Area 8-AA tournament next week.
