Buford’s Kelsey Bennett hit a two-run home run in the first game and grand slam in Game 2 as it swept Hiram in the first round of the Class 5A softball state tournament Wednesday in Buford. The Lady Wolves won the opener 16-0, followed by a 10-0 win in the second game.
In Game 1, Tennessee commit Logan Caymol pitched three perfect innings for Buford, striking out 8 of the 9 batters in the three-inning outing. Anabel Adams added a two-run home run for the Lady Wolves (23-4). Also for Buford, Hannah Jo Hyatt had a pair of doubles.
In the second game, Ansley Byers picked up the win in the pitching circle, giving up just two hits in three innings of work. Bennett added an RBI triple.
Abbi Perkins finished with an RBI double for Buford.
Up next, Buford will host Miller Grove, starting with a doubleheader Tuesday in the best-of-three series.
CHESTATEE SWEPT IN OPENING ROUND: The Lady War Eagles (14-12) lost in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs to Stephens County after losing 5-0 in Game 1, and seeing a late rally fall just short with a 3-2 loss in the nightcap.
In Game 2, a three-run bottom of the third gave Stephens County the lead for good. Bailey Mason (1 for 3, double, run scored) and Danielle Ortega (1 for 2) drove in both runs for Chestatee during a two-run top of the sixth.
East Hall advanced to the second round of the Class 3A playoffs by beating Redan High in straight sets (25-12, 25-20, 25-16) on Wednesday night in Stone Mountain.
Savannah Thellman produced 21 assists with four digs for the Lady Vikings (31-17), who also received 15 kills and five blocks from Niyah Rucker. Summer Lindsey had 21 digs, while Holly Poole registered 11 digs and five kills.
Tessa Rider notched 15 digs, Janelly Lara had 10 digs with three aces and Macy Thomas recorded five kills.
East Hall travels to face Jackson County High for its second-round match at a time to be determined next Tuesday in Jefferson.
FLOWERY BRANCH FALLS: The Lady Falcons were eliminated from the Class 5A volleyball tournament, falling 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-15) to Decatur.
In their final match, seniors Anna Marshall and Ellie Luciani helped keep the Lady Falcons (16-8) afloat in this contested match. Marshall fired a team-high 10 kills with three blocks. Luciani extended rallies with 22 digs, while junior setter Oriah Ware dished 21 assists and added three service aces.
Also for the Lady Falcons, Katie Williams added nine kills, while Ashley Scott had three kills, one ace and 22 digs.
