A Gainesville man reportedly breaking into a car Friday morning in a Lawrenceville driveway was fatally shot by a resident, police said.

James Brock, 50, was identified by Gwinnett County Police as the intruder who died on the scene.

Around 1 a.m. Friday, Robert Morton, 20, of Lawrenceville, heard noises downstairs at his Mayfield Farms Drive home. He grabbed his firearm and encountered “an intruder outside breaking into a vehicle in the driveway,” according to police.

“(Morton) verbally challenged the intruder,” police said. “The intruder charged at the resident, and the resident fired more than one shot striking the intruder.”

Police identified Brock on Friday afternoon, and no charges are expected for Morton.

“Brock’s motivations for choosing the Morton residence are still unclear,” police said.
