A couple from Jefferson are accused of beating two dogs to death, according to authorities.

Byron Glenn Burgess, 53, and Valerie Dawn Burgess, 53, were charged Dec. 1 by a Hall County grand jury with two counts of cruelty to animals and one count of false statements to law enforcement.

Their attorney David McLeod did not respond to multiple calls for comment Wednesday.

According to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, a Chihuahua and a Yorkshire terrier were found dead on the couple’s property. The two were arrested and charged June 14, 2015.

“Both individuals denied owning a yorkie or a Chihuahua,” Sheriff’s Office Lt. Scott Ware wrote in an email.

No further information was released by law enforcement.

According to the indictment, Byron and Valerie Burgess told law enforcement “they did not know what caused the death of (the) two dogs.”
