The former Sam’s Club in Oakwood now will become a corporate support service center for the Northeast Georgia Health System. The health system, anchored by Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, has signed a lease for the building, which is off Frontage Road, near Mundy Mill Road and Interstate 985.“As our health system expands and the needs of our support services grow, we have outgrown what our Gainesville campus can accommodate,” said Carol Burrell, president and CEO.“Additionally, as we build our new hospital in Braselton, a more central location is needed for support services that will serve both campuses.”Northeast Georgia Medical Center Braselton, which will be off the new Ga. 347/Lanier Islands Parkway near Ga. 211/Old Winder Highway, is slated to open in the spring of 2015.Burrell also cited the convenience of the new offices being near I-985, a main artery through Hall County. The health system will renovate the building to make it conducive to office functions, she said.Hospital officials are designing the space “to take advantage of more efficient work flows between departments that can now be positioned together due to the larger space this location offers,” a hospital news release states. The first departments to move to the center will be Revenue Cycle, which handles patient accounts and billing, and Northeast Georgia Physicians Group Administration, including the NGPG Revenue Cycle department’s billing office.Over time, additional support departments will join as needed.About 200 employees will work in the building initially, Burrell said,“We are very pleased that NGHS has chosen this location for their corporate support service center,” saidOakwood Mayor Lamar Scroggs in the news release.“The number of employees working here will positively impact our local economy as will the stability of an organization like NGHS,” he added.“With the development of Thurmon Tanner Parkway, more and more businesses are seeing this area as an ideal location for corporate service development.”Renovations will begin this summer, with completion estimated for early 2014, Burrell said.According to Hall County records, the building’s size is 107,826 square feet with a 2,072-square-foot “service repair garage.” The building, owned by Walmart of Bentonville, Ark., was constructed in 1992.Sam’s Club operated out of the building until several years ago, when it moved to a site off Mundy Mill near Thurmon Tanner Parkway.A furniture store and flea market previously occupied the old Sam’s building.Oakwood City Manager Stan Brown said the hospital “coordinated with us (in the leasing effort), just to get a city perspective, and we appreciated that interaction.“We’re excited about (the move). We think it will be great to get a very vibrant occupant in that building, and we know the hospital will do a great job over there.”Further details, including the lease period and whether there will be any external renovations, weren’t known Thursday.
