A 3-year-old died Sunday after unintentionally firing a handgun, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said in a news release Monday.

Jefferson police responded around 2 p.m. Sunday to Fairfield Drive in Jefferson, where officers discovered the injured child outside of the house with several adults attempting to help.

“It was reported the child accidentally discharged a handgun,” the release said.

The child was transported to the Athens Regional Medical Center and later died.

The GBI Crime Lab is examining the child’s body.

“I can’t comprehend what this family is experiencing right now, and it’s tough on those responding to the scene,” Jefferson Police Chief Joe Wirthman said. “It’s just a horrific tragedy.”
