The African American Heritage Site at the Sautee Nacoochee Center presents Joseph McGill, creator of the Slave Dwelling Project, on Friday, April 27. McGill, who works with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, founded the Slave Dwelling Project to call the nation’s attention to the plight and importance of preserving the vanishing structures that sheltered enslaved people during the antebellum period. McGill has slept in 30 slave quarters in eight states, most recently at Friendfield Plantation, S.C. The Nacoochee slave cabin will be his first sleepover in Georgia slave dwelling.
