Area musicians John Hirt and Kurt Thomas will share their voices and musical talent this weekend at Shenanigans in downtown Dahlonega.

Hirt, who plays as a solo act or with the Tin River band as a duo, will have audience members rocking with a three-piece band plus a harmonica or a full band with drums, bass and electric guitars. He will play from 9 p.m. to midnight Friday.

Characterized as Americana, Hirt encompasses many styles including alternative, outlaw country, classic rock and indie. He covers an eclectic list of songs from artists such as Johnny Cash, Neil Young, Willie Nelson, Tom Petty, Pearl Jam and Nirvana. He will also share original tunes.

On Saturday, Thomas will take the stage from 8:30-11:30 p.m. at the Irish pub.

Growing up in the close-knit country life of Dahlonega, Thomas heard local musician, Jay Drummonds, sing “Small Town” by John Cougar Mellencamp at his high school graduation. At that moment, he decided what he wanted to do with his life. After graduation, he bought his first guitar for $80 from his friend, musician Zac Brown.

Now, Thomas aims to captivate his audience, whether playing old favorites or his own songs.

“I have always tried to stay in touch with the fact that a good song tells a story and most of my songs always do,” he said.

Both concerts will be at Shenanigans, 87 N. Chestatee St., Dahlonega. No cover charge.
