Gainesville head coach Todd Cottrell has been named Region 8-AAAAA Coach of the Year by the region’s coaches. Cottrell led the Red Elephants (19-9) to the region championship in their first year in Class AAAAA, guiding the team to 11 straight wins to close the regular season. Gainesville will host Hiram in the first round of the state tournament at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
