Haynes claims City-County title

After starting the day with a three-stroke lead, Landry Haynes stayed steady as ever, firing a 71 on the final day of the City-County Golf Championship, winning the tournament by five strokes.

Haynes, a rising senior at North Hall High, led wire-to-wire, finishing Day 1 tied atop the leaderboard at 73, then making his move Saturday, shooting a 70.

Haynes is the reigning Times Golfer of the Year after winning low-medallist honors at the 2009 Region 7-AAA tournament. He also finished as the state runner-up in the Class AAA 2008 meet.

Justin Cochran, a 2009 Gainesville High graduate, shot a 73 each day to finish at 219, tied for second with 2008’s winner, Will Peeples. Peeples finished with a Sunday-best 70 and won the top Championship Flight net score division (219) by two strokes over Jim Foote.

Jace Windom, a 2006 Gainesville High grad, took fourth place in the Championship Flight with a three-day gross total of 220.

Matt Mangus won the First Flight gross division, firing a 70 to finish with a two-round total of 150, edging second-place Joe Ingram by one stroke.

Jimbo Wilkins won the First Flight net division (141) by three strokes over second-place finishers Ralph Campbell and Tony Tankersley.
