Young Harris College and the University of Montevallo split a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader on Monday in Young Harris.

Zach Bricknell hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning as Young Harris took the opener 3-2. The Mountain Lions took a 1-0 lead in the opener on Adam Moore’s first homer of the season in the third inning. Bricknell gave the Mountain Lions the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth with his fourth homer after Tom Valichka singled.

Young Harris (8-7, 1-5 PBC) reliever Cody Beck (2-0) picked up the victory.

Young Harris visits the University of North Carolina-Pembroke at 1 p.m. Saturday in Pembroke, N.C.

MONTEVALLO 9, YOUNG HARRIS 7: Montevallo jumped out to a 6-0 lead as the Falcons scored three runs each in the first and third innings in game two of the doubleheader. Jackson Slaid had a two-run single in the first while Andrew Hill had a two-run single in the third.

The Mountain Lions got two runs back in the bottom of the third, including one on Jack Morrow’s single. The teams traded runs in the fourth inning as Montevallo took a 7-3 lead. Bricknell hit a homer to right-center in the fourth for Young Harris.

Young Harris scored three times in the bottom half of the inning on Morrow’s homer — his fourth of the season — to left before the Mountain Lions added a run in bottom of the ninth as the Falcons committed two errors.

Miles Nagel (0-2) took the loss for the Mountain Lions.


YOUNG HARRIS 6, DOMINICAN COLLEGE 5: The Mountain Lions used a three-run sixth to break out to a 6-3 lead in the first game of a doubleheader on Monday in Clermont, Fla. Sydnee Weaver had a two-run single while Kayla Jones drove in the other with a single. Dominican got a two-run homer from Kimberly Ragazzo in the seventh to account for the final score.

Darby Stanford (7-2) struck out 10 in the complete-game effort while Delaney Childers took the loss in relief.

Young Harris (12-6) faces West Virginia Wesleyan College at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Clermont, Fla.

YOUNG HARRIS 9, DOMINICAN COLLEGE 3: The Mountain Lions jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning of the nightcap on RBI hits from Sarah Magill and Amber Statham. After Dominican got a run back in the third, Young Harris pushed across four runs in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead. Callie Holloway led off with her second homer of the season and Paige Sexton added a run-scoring double. Weaver contributed a sacrifice fly and Stacia Williams closed out the scoring with a RBI single.

Dominican added a run in the bottom of the fourth before the Mountain Lions added three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 9-2 lead. Jones stroked a two-run homer to highlight the inning.

Katie-Jo Gentry (2-4) earned the win, while Brittany Henry earned her first save. Ragazzo took the loss for Dominican.


YOUNG HARRIS WOMEN 9, UNC PEMBROKE 0: Young Harris swept a Peach Belt Conference women’s tennis match from the University of North Carolina-Pembroke on Monday in Savannah.

Charlotte Dawson, Lina Parra Pava, Charlotte Moreau, Diana DiMarco, Carolina Hernandez, and Stormy Dvorak picked up singles wins for the Mountain Lions. Dawson and Jane Plevako won at No. 1 doubles, Hernandez and Moreau picked up the win at the No. 2 spot, and Parra Pava and DiMarco got the win at No. 3 doubles.

Young Harris (7-3, 2-2 PBC) faces Clayton State University at 2 p.m. today in Morrow.
