The University of North Georgia will start a concentration in Japanese studies in fall 2017, thanks to a $400,000 grant from the Japan Foundation.
Up to 15 students per year will be able to study in Japan, and visiting speakers will come to UNG.
The grant will allow for a combination of a minor in Chinese, Japanese or Korean language with a regional focus developed from coursework in anthropology, culture, digital animation and film, history, international affairs, philosophy and political science.
It will be part of a future East Asian studies degree program, Christopher Jespersen, dean of the College of Arts and Letters, said.
UNG began its Chinese program in 2006 and added Korean a few years later. UNG offers studies in 10 languages.
