Tax-free weekend starts today for back-to-school shoppers and anyone else who needs a few new outfits or some computer equipment. State sales tax will be waived as moms and dads stock up on supplies just in time for the start of school Monday in the Hall County and Gainesville school systems. The tax exemptions cover a variety of items, but there are certain exclusions.
When: Today and Saturday
Where: Nearly all retail outlets selling items on the tax-free list; check website for exceptions.
On the tax-free list: Clothing less than $100 per item, computers and equipment less than $1,000 per item and school supplies less than $20 per item.
A few of the clothing exclusions: Jewelry, handbags, umbrellas, baby accessories and cosmetics. A few of the computer equipment exclusions: Batteries, CDs and DVDs, cellphones, digital cameras and TVs.
School supply exclusions: Books, not including children’s books, envelopes, janitorial supplies, medical supplies, trade/business supplies and briefcases.
