Hall County got a heavy, steady dose of snowfall Thursday afternoon.

Fat, wet snowflakes continued to fall during the afternoon Thursday in downtown Gainesville while temperatures hovered in the mid-30s. Heavy snow also was reported in areas to the north such as White, Lumpkin and Habersham counties.

The snow was accumulating in some grassy areas, trees and shrubs but not on roadways. The snow line appears to begin around Buford and the South Hall area, with sleet and rain to the south.

Rain was in the forecast for later today when temperatures were warmer. But precipitation came sooner and, when mixed with frigid air, the result was snow, according to the National Weather Service.

“We’re getting a lot of reports of snow in North Georgia,” meteorologist Carly Kovacik said.

Hall County is under a winter weather advisory until 10 p.m., with possible sleet and snow accumulations up to an inch. Overnight lows are not expected to reach freezing in Hall County but could drop lower in areas to the north.

“As temperatures drop, roads may become slick, especially on bridges and overpasses,” the advisory says.

Temperatures could fall into the low 30s or even chillier in higher elevations.
