A Gwinnett County Police officer fatally shot a 27-year-old Buford man who reportedly raised a gun at officers before 4 a.m. Thursday in Buford, according to authorities.
Police identified the man as Steven D. Hutchins, who had recently lived at a home on Gold Creek Trail, a short walking distance from the incident.
Dispatch received a call of a man with a gun walking down Peachtree Industrial Boulevard toward Nelson Brogdon Boulevard.
Officers reportedly could see a weapon in the man’s waistband when they confronted him at a laundromat in the shopping center, according to Gwinnett County Police.
“At one point, the man pulled the gun out of his waistband and began to raise it at the officers,” Cpl. Michele Pihera wrote in a news release. “One of the officers fired at the man striking him.”
An officer rendered aid while waiting for the Gwinnett County Fire Department, who determined the man had died.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will now conduct the investigation.
“There is a surveillance camera mounted on the exterior of the building near the scene,” Pihera wrote. “At this time, it is unclear if this event was captured on film.”
