A 75-year-old man committed suicide in the parking lot of the Food Lion supermarket in Oakwood today, police said.

Oakwood Police Chief Randall Moon said the man parked his car in the store’s parking lot shortly before 4 p.m., got out of the car and shot himself in the head with a handgun.

Authorities were withholding the man’s name pending notification of next of kin.

Moon said no one witnessed the suicide or heard a gunshot, but the man’s body was discovered soon after. A handgun was found on the ground near the body, and authorities ruled the shooting a suicide soon after arriving on the scene.

It is the standard policy of The Times not to report on suicides except when they occur in a public place or involve a public figure.
